SAMUN 2003 ICJ Information
Welcome to the ICJ, This year's ICJ will be run differently from previous years in an attempt to broaden the use and understanding of the ICJ processes. The court this year will entertain four permanent cases and a maximum of up to three additional cases which will be considered by the court. In addition to the cases the ICJ will be open to give advisory opinions on topics presented by member states and organizations. The court will consist of the President, myself, and four other judges: Victoria Turner, Katie Sweeting, Alexandra Ayala and Hope Turner. Each case will be considered by the full court and the final decisions will be announced in the General Assembly on the last day of the conference. The first two days of the conference the court will be open for consultation and to provide assistance to the delegates that are participating in the conference. It is recommended that the memorials and counter memorials from the four set cases are to be sent to the SAMUN email account by the Monday (November 3 rd ) before the conference. This will allow the court to read over the papers and aid the delegates on the first and second days. On the Monday and Tuesday (November 10 th and 11th) when the General Assembly is in full session the court will hear the oral part of the proceedings. The process will take the form of parliamentary debate as outlined below. There will be a preparatory time of one minute between the speeches and two minutes prior to the respondent's rebuttal. Following the debate there will be cross questioning of the applicant and respondent and the decision will be taken by the judges and announced in the General Assembly.
Many Thanks, Marcus Nicholls President of the ICJ
