SAMUN XIV General Assembly Information

GENERAL ASSEMBLY LOBBYING DURING SAMUN XIV

•  On the first day of the conference when lobbying begins delegates should be in lobbying in their Sub-Committees on the topics at hand. In the second day the lobbying will continue in the Sub-Committees. The location of lobby rooms will be posted at the reception desk near the entrance to CIC and included in your “welcome packet” during the orientation meeting. Be sure to bring enough copies of your resolution for lobbying.

•  When lobby time begins, meet with other delegates from like-minded countries to merge your resolutions. Remember that a minimum of twelve co-submitters is necessary to take a resolution to the Approval Panel.

•  Two (and only two!) of the co-submitters then go to the computer room to merge the various elements of the new resolution. Members of the Administrative Staff and faculty sponsors will be available to assist you with mergers and/or with the computers.

•  One hour only is allowed for each team in the computer room. The Admin. Staff will keep time.

•  Print the merged resolution and be sure that it meets with the approval of all of the co-submitters.

  1. •  Once the resolution has been merged to the satisfaction of all co-submitted, the Admin. Staff will make four copies free of charge.
  2. •  Take three copies to the Sub-Committee chair. You will get a receipt from the Admin. Staff member in charge in return for your copies.

NOTE: The Approval Panel consists of MUN Directors from various participating schools. It does not make judgments about the content of the resolution and “approval” does not imply that the resolution has the sanction of the teachers involved. The following criteria are used by the Approval Panel.

a. Format (see the sample in the Instructional Guide)
b. Language (grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation)
c. Logical consistency

•  Check back with your Sub-Committee chair hourly.

•  If your resolution has been rejected by the Approval Panel, you will find the reasons in writing on one copy of the resolution.

  1. If you do not understand, you may ask to speak to your chair.
  2.   Once you understand what you need to do to get your resolution approved, return to the computer room to make the necessary revisions. Be sure to get the approval of all of the co-submitters.
  3. Get your resolution photocopied (four copies free) and return to your Sub-Committee chair.

•  If your resolution is approved by the Approval Panel, it will be discussed in the Sub-Committee, it may later be declared in the GA and put into the Assembly Resolution Book. One copy will be returned to you, one copy will be held for the SAMUN Director, and one copy will go immediately to the Admin. Staff.

•  For the Assembly to debate your resolution, you must get the floor at the appropriate time.
