Committees are Challenged by Emergency Issues

In order to make the JMUN experience as real as possible, each committee was forced to deal with an emergency issue created by each of the committees’ Chairs. These issues were resolved today in debates that took place after lunch. All the committees had to find solutions to the problems that they were given and then they were challenged to write the resolution which would pass.

In the Human Rights committee, delegates discussed a resolution regarding the enslavement of women and young girls and the consequent problem created for Europe because many African families move there in order to save their members from this social evil. The resolution passed, and the majority of the delegates agreed on these points:

  • The UN should have a large security presence in seaports and on ships for the purpose of stopping the transportation of women and girls.
  • Find out those who are responsible and send them to jail.
  • Create associations to protect and give shelter to women and girls.
  • Create anti-slavery associations.

The Security Council discussed the political turmoil in Haiti caused by a presidential candidate’s failure of a court test. Civil turmoil ensued between protesters and police generating a crisis in the country.

The members of the committee agreed on the following points,

  • Peace keepers should be sent to Haiti, and the candidate should be given a chance to run again and re-take the test.
  • There should be an inspection to verify whether or not there has been a manipulation of the electoral process.
  • The candidate’s failure of the test demonstrates that he is not prepared to run for president.
  • Peace-building troops should be sent to the region to help with the violence between the police and the protesters.
  • The president should issue a call for peace from his people.

The resolution passed:

The Environment committee talked about the problems that people in South African countries are having because of flash flooding and heavy rains. The points that the representatives of the different countries agreed on were the following:

  • Other countries should help the South African countries by providing supplies such as food, medicine, and money to cure illnesses.
  • They should also donate clothes and blankets.

The Peace Building committee tried to decide how to help Iran because there are important damages in infrastructure of the country as a result of the attack by the United States. Iran was working on gaining a nuclear capability.  The US had asked them to stop. Iran declined and the US attacked. Now, besides the important loss of lives, the infrastructure needs to be rebuilt because people have nowhere to live. The committee agreed on these points:

  • The US has to pay for Iran’s infrastructure and rebuild it. If the Americans do that, Iran will agree to negotiate about its nuclear policy.
  • Other countries should help Iran in everything it needs and give it the supplies needed.
  • Other countries should help with the water.

 The resolution, again, passed.

The ECOSOC committee discussed the problem between Venezuela and the United States. The United states has placed a trade embargo on Venezuela. The allies of Venezuela are clearly affected by the dispute, and the problem is growing bigger. The committee agreed that

  • The decision of the US was irrational.
  • Countries should make the decisions they want.
  • The problem should be discussed between Venezuela and the US only. Other countries should not be involved in discussions
