Works Cited

MLA Guide: Works Cited

The Works Cited list appears at the end of your research and is the list of references (also known as the Bibliography) that you have used and cited
in your research. It is essential to document the sources from which you have borrowed ideas, information, quotations, facts, or opinions in order to
allow readers to locate them. CIC uses the Modern Language Association (MLA) style to format the Works Cited list.

General Guidelines

  1. Continue page numbers from research paper.
  2. Center the title (Works Cited) one inch from top of page. Do not underline or use italics or quotation marks in this title.
  3. Double space throughout your list including between and within entries.
  4. Begin each entry against left margin; if an entry is longer than one line use a hanging indent of .5 inch for each subsequent line. (Type an entire citation for a source first and highlight it; then choose FormatParagraphIndentationHanging and Microsoft WORD will automatically
format it for you. If using other word processing programs, search for similar aids.) DO NOT USE TAB or space bar to create your indent.
  5. List your sources alphabetically by author’s last name; if no author is given use title, ignoring A, An, or The Titles, except for those of articles, should be italicized or underlined. Be consistent and use the same method throughout your list. If you are creating your Works Cited list on a computer, then italicizing is preferable to avoid confusion with online addresses that will automatically be underlined.
  6. Do not double space after a period.
