Physics

Physics is the study of energy and its interaction with matter. Because of the primacy of energy in terms of the history of the universe, because all matter must interact with energy to express its properties and engage in transformations, and because energy is the key player when matter is decomposed into its most basic parts, physics is often considered to be the fundamental science. Physics is delivered at 10th, 11th and 12th Grade level. The emphasis in all three years is on rigorous study and fun. As can be seen from the detailed information contained within the links to the grade areas - the courses are planned meticulously with a variety of activities designed to assist all students of differing learning styles to excel. Use is made of out of class hours, the internet and Physics Club to consolidate and expand learning.

Students will practice their personal, presentation, technological and creative skills as part of the belief in educating the whole person. Students are encouraged to read around the subject being studied and to keep up to date with current scientific developments. Students are urged to consider the philisophical and moral implications linked to developments in physics, while at the same time bearing in mind the historical backdrop.

At the end of their period of study it is envisaged that the students will be more knowledgable about Physics and be equiped with the transferable skills needed to suceed in their further studies and adult life.

Much more information can be found by clicking on the Physics links.

Biology

The two biology courses (9th Grade MYP and 11th and 12th Grade IB Diploma Program) taught focus on content and scientific process. Their purposes are to prepare students to be scientifically literate, to understand the breadth of biological studies, and to formulate an appreciation for the subject. More information can be found by clicking on the biology link above.

Chemistry

Chemistry Grade 10 - After completing this course, students should be able to pursue further study in science and recognize the basic vocabulary, nomenclature, of the theories of chemistry. They should be able to solve basic mathematical problems encountered in chemistry, as well as apply those problem solving skills to other disciplines. Laboratory work will be stressed and students will learn to use common lab equipment safely and accurately, and to use computers to help in the gathering and manipulation of data. This will aid students to obtain, record, analyze and communicate experimental data efficiently and completely.

IB Chemistry - Chemistry is frequently referred to as the central science in-so-far-as the principals inherent within it underpin the physical environment in which we live, and all biological systems. Chemistry is an experimental science and the IB chemistry courses combine academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigation skills.

The course aims to provide opportunities for scientific study and creativity within global contexts. Students are expected to become familiar with a body of knowledge and methods/techniques, but emphasis is placed on their application. The course also aims to engender an awareness of the need for, and the value of, effective collaboration and communication during scientific activities, including an awareness of the moral/ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology. Throughout the course students are expected to develop an ability to analyze, evaluate and synthesize scientific information.

Teacher: Mr. Howard Horowitz

Middle School

Balanced Science is delivered from Grade 6 through 8. Students develop skills in scientific investigation and build a broad base of concepts that they will use in Upper School.
