BAND CONCERT "Celebration in Dance" - May 18, 2006

The CIC Wind Bands completed their 2005-2006 concert season on Thursday night with an evening of Dance music from around the world. The Beginning Band opened the evening with original music by Pearson and by Feldstein & O'Reilly. The Beginning Band was followed wth chamber music presented by first-time soloists Daniel, Yarid, Jenny, Loretta, Elouise, and Nicool, as well as several seasoned CIC soloists. The Concert Band continued the Dance music theme with Irish, North American, French and African influenced works by Kinyon, Osterling, Ravel and Shaffer. The Bands closed the evening (and the year) with a "year-in-review" photo montage accompanied by a surround-sound presentation of Gustav Holst's "Jupiter Chorale" from The Planets.

MUSICAL "Little Shop of Horrors" - May 11 & 12, 2006

The Broadway musical "Little Shop of Horrors" was the vehicle for the latest smashing success of CIC's Fine Arts students. The musical play, with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and original music by Alan Menken, starred students Ashley, Pedro, Mikel, Hanshin, Guillermo, Karina, Patty and Irinia. Dramatic, musical and technical support was amply provided by CIC's Elementary and Secondary Choirs, Advanced and Jazz Bands, I.B. Drama class, and numerous secondary students. The student cast drew full audiences on both Thursday and Friday nights.

MARCH MADNESS - March 23, 2006

A standing-room-only crowd greeted the CIC Wind Bands in the school's Auditorium on Thursday night for the long-awaited March Madness concert. The Beginning Band opened the show with a vocal rendition of Beethoven's Ode to Joy - sung with Frederich Schiller's original German text, in English, and in Latin - followed by an instrumental performance of the same work. The Beginners continued with Chili Pepper Rock. The Jazz Band performed music of Miles Davis, Outkast and Herbie Hancock, as well as a folkloric guaguanco (tambor) from the Carribean island of Cuba. The Concert Band brought the concert to its apex with a superb performance of the four-movement work Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs by Frank Ticheli before bringing the audience to its feet with a medley of 50's and 60's rock tunes. Between the Bands, individual Band members serenaded the audience with solos and duets on every intrument, including works by Chopin, Mozart, Bach, Ravel and more. Academic work in the field of music - created by the members of the Bands - was on display in the entry hall of the Auditorium, and refreshments sold by the 11th grade class brought a festive atmosphere to the evening.

SNEAK PREVIEWS - March 22, 2006

The CIC Bands had a very busy fourth week of March, giving two sneak previews of their March Madness repertoire during the school day.

On Wednesday morning, the Concert Band performed two movements of Frank Ticheli's Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs and the medley "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" for a full house in Secondary Assembly, receiving a full round of applause from students in 6th to 12th grades. They were immediately followed by the Jazz Band performing "Watermelon Man" by Herbie Hancock, featuring solos by Ashley and Simon.

In the afternoon of the same day, the 7th and 8th grade members of the Beginning and Concert Bands performed a sneak preview of the entire Beginning and Concert Band sets for an audience of CIC elementary students.

BEGINNING BAND IN SECONDARY ASSEMBLY - March 6, 2006

The CIC Beginning Band, made up of first-year Band students from grades 6 through 8, performed for a crowded house in Secondary Assembly on March 6. They opened the concert with the Latin flavor of Nicholas Forte's "Chili Pepper Rock", then closed with the ever-popular "Ode to Joy" theme from Beethoven's Symphony Nr. 9. The Beginning Band enjoyed a "home-field advantage" in playing for an audience of 7th-12th graders--most of whom had been members of CIC's Beginning Band themselves. The Beginning Band will perform these and other selections on Thursday, March 23, when they are joined by the CIC Concert and Jazz Bands in the 2006 March Madness program at 7 p.m. in the CIC Auditorium.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS, PART 2 - December 9, 2005

The Wind Bands of Colegio Internacional de Caracas wowed a full crowd on Friday, December 9 in a celebration of winter holiday spirit. The evening, entitled 'Festival of Lights, Part 2' followed Wednesday night's equally successful 'Festival of Lights, Part 1' which featured the CIC Elementary Choir and the students of CIC's grades K-5. Friday's Festival included performances by CIC's Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Jazz Bands, as well as solos and chamber music by individual CIC Band members. The centerpiece event of the evening was an auction of Maria Esther Taracena de Vera's sculpture Genesis. The winning bidder was a CIC Band Parent! Proceeds from the auction were donated by the artist to CIC's Ayuda y Amistad community service group. The auction was followed by CIC's flagship musical ensemble, the CIC Concert Band, which was awarded for its performance with a standing ovation from the audience.
