JAZZ ENSEMBLE AT JMUN - March 16, 2007

Back by popular demand! Following up on its acclaimed performance at the South American Model United Nations conference held at CIC in November, the CIC Jazz Ensemble rocked anew at the Junior Model United Nations conference on the CIC campus in March. The Band entertained more than 200 students from ten schools, as well as several ambassadors and diplomats, with tunes by Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, and the Band's director Cary Stewart. The Jazz Ensemble's next performance will be during the Fine Arts Week, May 8-11.

GUEST CLINICIAN MANUEL BARRIOS- February 28, 2007

On Wednesday, February 28, the CIC Bands hosted a masterclass by Mr. Manuel Barrios. Mr. Barrios is a professional saxophone player in several ensembles in Caracas. Mr. Barrios played several solos for his audience, discussed music and life as a musician, and even facilitated a jam session among several CIC Band Members. The clinic was a smashing success according to several audience members, and according to Mr. Barrios himself. "The students here (at CIC) play very well.  They have a good understanding of the fundamentals and they have good technique" Mr. Barrios was quoted as saying after the clinic.

 

VANAS SPORTS TOURNAMENT PERFORMANCE - February 22, 2007

The CIC Pop-Rock Ensemble entertained approximately 450 CIC students and visiting athletes, teachers and parents on Thursday afternoon as they opened the VANAS Boys Basketball/Girls Soccer Tournament at CIC. The performance included classic rock tunes as well as more recent Latin pop songs. Congratulations to the Pop-Rock Ensemble for yet another rocking show to represent our school to the wider Venezuelan community!

 

BAND CONCERT Adventure! on the High Seas - February 15, 2007

The CIC Bands entertained a full house on Thursday evening for their show Adventure! on the High Seas.  In the first half of the performance, the CIC Beginning Band and Wind Orchestra performing music about oceans, sailors, pirates and tropical islands.  The Wind Bands played works by O'Reilly, Smith, Schmid, Attaignant, Horner, and Huckeby.  The second half of the concert featured the vaunted CIC Jazz Ensemble playing works by Davis, Stewart and Hancock, as well as the newly acclaimed CIC Pop-Rock Ensemble covering music of Soda Stereo, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Tito Puente/Santana, and U2.

VANAS TEACHERS CONFERENCE PERFORMANCES - January 25-26, 2007

As several hundred teachers and special guests filled the CIC Campus with activity last Friday and Saturday, the members of the CIC Bands stepped into action. The young musicians of CIC impressed the throngs of visitors with chamber music and action-packed ensembles. The hit of the conference was the Jazz and Pop-Rock Ensembles concert during Friday lunch. Thanks to Angi, Simon, Jose Luis, Jenny, Julieta, Konrad, Nicolas, Saul, Mr. Acevedo and group director Mr. Stewart for their rocking Jazz Ensemble performance. Thanks to Catherine, Patricia, Pedro, Nicolas, Saul, Tomas, Ms. Giusti, Ms. Massieu, Mr. Acevedo, Mr. Whalen, Mr. Stewart and group director Mr. Rosales for an unforgettable Rock-Pop show. Thanks also to Allie, Ashley, David, Diego, Iri, Saul, Yael and Yarid who played solos Thursday and/or Friday. Special thanks go to Simon, who performed over two hours of solo music for the event! Wow! These CIC Band members are awesome!

EVENING WITH THE ARTS - November 24, 2007

CIC was alive with artistic energy of Friday evening for "Evening with the Arts". The main events of the evening were IB Drama, elementary music groups, and an Art Sale featuring works by CIC secondary art students. During the Art Sale, several CIC Band students serenaded the gathered Art lovers. Congratulations to Allie and Luifer for their duets, to Yarid for her performances of the "Animaniacs" theme and of her own original solo piece, and to Simon for his extended solo set of Disney theme music. Way to go, chamber musicians!

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND CAMP at ECA - November 18, 2006

CIC was well represented at the November Band Camp on Saturday, November 18.. Eight students made the trek to ECA to make music and friendships with other young musicians. The students spent the day in sectional and full-band sessions with professional musicians, learning about their instruments and music. The Camp, which included students from CIC, ECA and Colegio Emil Friedmann, ended with an informal concert for parents and friends.  CIC student Luis Fernando won an award for sight-reading competition at the camp. CIC will host a similar Camp on Saturday, March 3, 2007.

SAMUN XVII OPENING CEREMONY - November 11, 2006

The CIC Jazz Ensemble performed for ambassadors and dignitaries last Saturday.  The occasion for the group's command performance was the opening ceremony of South American Model United Nations XVII on the campus of CIC.  The Jazz Ensemble played four tunes, including Miles Davis' "So What", two original compositions by director Mr. Stewart, and a hot Latin rock arrangement of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man".  Upon conclusion of the performance, several Band members took their seats as SAMUN delegates and committee chairs.  The rhythm section, featuring CIC counselor Mr. Jose Acevedo, kept the groove going with classic rock covers dring the lunch hour.

 

OTMARO RUIZ JAZZ CONCERT - November 5, 2006

Members of the CIC Bands took a trip to the Sala Corp Banca auditorium to hear the 2006 edition of Otmaro Ruiz's annual concert in benefit of ANAPACE foundation.  Otmaro played music from his most recent album, including original compositions and fresh interpretations of jazz standards such as 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'.

 

BAND CONCERT "Antiphony" - October 19, 2006

Themes of opposing forces formed the backbone of a music concert given Thursday night by the Colegio Internacional de Caracas Wind Bands.  The performance, entitled Antiphony, explored various combinations of opposing ideas – loud and soft, high and low, fast and slow, etc.  The CIC Beginning Band opened the evening with performances of folk melodies and classical themes from around the world.  Soloists Simon and Yarid followed.  The CIC Jazz Ensemble improvised over an original tune in the modal jazz style before flexing their solo chops on Miles Davis’ classic tune “So What”.  Event headliners, the CIC Wind Orchestra, explored the Antiphony theme of opposites through the pieces “Loco-Motion”, two versions of the school song, and a beautiful setting of the folk song “Shenandoah”.  The Wind Orchestra brought the evening to a very successful close with their rendition of “Mambo No. 5”.

 

VOLLEYBALL PEP RALLY - October 3, 2006

The CIC Wind Orchestra supported the CIC Varsity Volleyball teams at a Pep Rally on October 3.  The Rally was held in anticipation of the Volleyball teams' trip to VANAS Volleyball Tournament in October.  The WO played several pop-rock tunes to warm up the crowd and introduce the teams before the exhibition games of teachers v.s students.

WELCOME BACK BBQ PERFORMANCE - September 23, 2006

The CIC Wind Orchestra gave a sneak preview of its 2006-2007 season with an appearance at the Welcome Back Barbeque on September 23.  The WO played a relaxed set of three tunes, including Loco-Motion, the school song, and Mambo No. 5. The WO was followed by a DJ, Bailoterapia, and lots of food.  The WO will formally kick off their concert season in conjunction with the CIC Jazz Ensemble and Beginning Band in a production on October 19 entitled Antiphony.
