Here are some links to the ESOL department's favorite web sites.
Also known as Dave Sperling's ESL café. This site has abundant information for both elementary and secondary school ESOL teachers. Check out the ideas section for lessons that incorporate everything from cooking, music and math into ESOL lessons.
Lots of good activities and lesson plans for elementary ESOL. The site includes a teacher discussion forum, a section on teaching techniques, as well as a section with recommendations of books and other ESOL resource material.
The New York Times Learning Center site is geared for grades 3-12 with activities that tie to many subject areas. Included are: word of the day, quote of the day, conversation starters related to current events, and theme related weekly crossword puzzles.
The Internet TESL Journal site has many articles on ESOL teaching techniques, as well as articles related to a variety of ESOL classrooms. The best part of this site however, is the well-organized section of online exercises for students.
A nice feature of this site is the student chat room. It allows ESOL students from around the world to practice their written English as they write to each other. This site also has links to a variety of on-line English learning programs available that parents may consider as summer or school break option for their ESOL child.
Kenneth Beare's easy to navigate site includes lesson plans, links to student exchange programs, an ESOL teacher chat room, and upcoming courses available for teachers. Especially nice is the free newsletter available on request.
