Grade 11 English A1 Higher and Standard Levels Mr. Paul McCann
This course emphasizes developing and practicing analytical skills when approaching literature and other written media. These skills include close critical reading; writing commentaries and presenting them orally; identifying and analyzing authors' purposes in using certain literary techniques; writing essays for different purposes (ex. personal, persuasive, descriptive, comparative, etc.) formally, informally, jointly and independently; and diverse oral presentations (ex. debates, mock trials, role-playing, panel discussions, dramatic renderings, Socratic seminars, etc.). Generally, students cover Parts I and IV during their first year.
Grade 11 English A2 Higher and Standard Levels Mr. Mike East
This course will help students develop a variety of linguistic skills through the study of a wide range of "texts" (literary, business, political, documentary-style, cartoons, editorials, etc.) to promote an appreciation of the wealth and complexities of English. Students in this course are given opportunities to write for a wide range of audiences to develop stronger competence in English and to explore cultures where English is a primary language of public and private interaction. Generally, students complete one literature option and one topic option in their first year.
Grade 12 English A1 Higher and Standard Levels Mr. Mike East
This course will incorporate skills gained from engaging in the tasks learned in Grade 11 to develop greater experience and confidence before the final IB English Al exam and completion of other formal written and oral assessments required in 12th grade. These include the World Literature Assignment(s) and the Formal Oral Commentary. Generally, students complete Parts II and III during their second year.
