Onalis
Velasquez first came to CIC in 1995, and since 1997 she has occupied
the
important position of AyA coordinator, being the third one since AyA's
start. She teaches Spanish as the second language to High School and
Middle
School students (6th to 12th grade), and also occupies the key position
of CAS coordinator for the IB diploma candidates.
One of her main achievements as AyA coordinator was to further tighten of the bonds between the CIC community and the AyA, allowing students from 6th to 10th grade to participate in the activity (before that only juniors and seniors were allowed in the activities). Furthermore, she also managed to involve the CIC faculty in the planning of activities, as well as participation.
In her words, 'the objective of AyA is to open up the minds of the CIC community to the reality of the country'. Through her experiences, she has seen the participants radically change their views of their lives, and "grow up" as a mature member of a society. She encourages students to participate in the activities, and emphasize the great experience and benefits that they bring to both participants and the whole community.

AyA activities are not led only by the teachers, but mainly by a group of interested and committed members of the CIC student body who work actively to organize, monitor and put into practice activities to be enjoyed by the kids in the orphanages. They also help usher during benefit concerts.
The 2008-2009 AYA officers are:
Not only the Coordinators and the officers, but other members of the community support and are actively involved with AyA.
