Model UN

Our school is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of high school MUN programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is among the oldest and well-developed of such programs in the region and is arguably the leading English-speaking MUN program in Venezuela. CIC offers its students a year-round program with opportunities to participate in delegate or officer roles at the local, regional and international MUNs, which either we host (JMUN and SAMUN) or of which we are long-standing partners (THIMUN at The Hague in Holland). In recognition of CIC’s long-standing commitment to the MUN concept and programs, The THIMUN Organization has formally designated CIC’s SAMUN conference as one of its regional official affiliates.

Junior Model United Nations (JMUN)

Colegio Internacional de Caracas (CIC) hosts an annual Junior Model United Nations (JMUN) Conference—a truly extraordinary educational event. CIC has now hosted JMUN for 17 consecutive years. This is an event for students in grades six through eight. JMUN appears in a similar format to that of SAMUN but JMUN has an altogether different feel. It is a high energy, friendly debating forum for younger students new to the MUN organization. JMUN is a regional event and host to many of the top educational institutes in Venezuela. The conference is organized and led by high school students at CIC. You may access our JMUN portal using the link below, which includes our JMUNDO newspaper, photo gallery and conference resources.

This year’s JMUN conference will be hosted at CIC on March 13th and 14th, 2010.

South American Model United Nations (SAMUN)

This year’s 4-day SAMUN conference in November took place on campus and at the penthouse conference facility of the CorpGroup Foundation in La Castellana. Attendance was close to a record 300 participants, of which 275 were students and the remainder 20 school MUN Directors. The conference’s theme was International Reconciliation in recognition of the UN’s designation of 2009 as the International Year of Reconciliation. CIC’s executive leadership team included Joanna Nelson, Secretary-General, Angel Pena, General Assembly President, Yarid Reyes, Security Council President, and Luis Fernando Schachner, ICJ Chief Justice. Both CIC and visiting school student delegates and Directors roundly applauded what was considered one of the most exciting and successful SAMUN conferences ever.

Stay tuned for the upcoming THIMUN conference results in January and preparations for our annual CIC-hosted JMUN conference for middle schoolers in the Spring of 2010.

CIC’s student team for THIMUN is undergoing intense preparation and training for the upcoming THIMUN conference in the Hague, Netherlands this January 2010. CIC is one of the longest-standing partner school’s of the Hague conference. In fact, one of the architects and a founding figure of the exisitng 20 year-old SAMUN program was Irving Stein. Mr. Stein is considered one of the leaders in the worldwide creation of student MUN programs and an influential leader in the THIMUN program.

Our team this year forms the delegation for the UNHCHR, the UN’s High Commissoner for Human Rights. This is the UN organization charged with oversight, coordination and special HR initiatives/activities as prescribed by the UN Charter and pursuant to international Treaty agreements.
